The Classroom as a Community of Learners

At the Fox Hill School, the classroom is more than just a learning space—it is a vibrant community where children and teachers come together with shared values of respect, responsibility, safety, and trust. As members of this community, teachers model these essential principles and guide children in developing important social and emotional skills. Through daily experiences, children learn to solve problems, take pride in their work and environment, and offer kindness and support to their peers.

The classroom environment is intentionally designed to foster independence and curiosity. A key feature of our approach is the use of interest centers—clearly defined areas of the classroom where children engage in hands-on, meaningful activities that reflect both developmental goals and individual interests.

These centers include: Blocks, Puzzles & Games, Dramatic Play, Art & Collage, Woodworking, Math & Manipulatives, Writing & Language, Sensory Table, Science & Discovery, Library & Listening, Kitchen/Cooking, and Outdoor Exploration.

Teachers and children collaboratively shape the content of these centers throughout the day. For example, the Science & Discovery center might feature a real pumpkin or freshly picked apples. A teacher may begin by guiding children in cutting open the fruit to explore what’s inside. As interest grows, this simple activity can evolve into a self-directed learning experience—children might examine the fruit with magnifying glasses, sketch what they see, count the seeds, compare textures, or label parts of the fruit.

Through these organic, play-based experiences, children engage in rich, multidisciplinary learning—connecting science, math, language, art, and sensory exploration in meaningful, developmentally appropriate ways.

Upstairs Classroom
"Lions"

Our upstairs classroom is a warm and welcoming space designed for a mixed-age group of children ages 2.9 to 5 years old. With a cozy class size of up to 14 children and two dedicated teachers, this classroom offers a nurturing, close-knit environment where children can learn and grow at their own pace. Though smaller in size, it includes all the same thoughtfully designed learning centers as our downstairs classroom—supporting play, exploration, and skill-building across all developmental areas. Both classrooms follow our Tell Me a Story curriculum, using children’s literature as a springboard for meaningful, child-led learning.

With the capacity for up to 20 children and three nurturing teachers, this classroom provides a dynamic setting where children can explore, collaborate, and grow together. Like our upstairs space, it features a full range of thoughtfully arranged learning centers that support all areas of development through play and discovery. Both classrooms maintain a 7:1 student-to-teacher ratio and follow our Tell Me a Story curriculum, using quality children's literature to inspire curiosity, creativity, and meaningful learning experiences.

Outdoor Classroom
Playground

At Fox Hill School, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—our outdoor playground is a vibrant extension of our curriculum. Children explore nature with magnifying glasses and binoculars, observe seasonal changes, and engage in hands-on discovery. In the mud kitchen, imagination comes alive as children collaborate, problem-solve, and create together. Whether they’re building, digging, or observing insects up close, our outdoor space offers rich opportunities for physical, social, and cognitive growth in a natural, joyful setting.
