Weekly Update March 13 - Celebrating 30 Years of Learning — and a Special Journey to Reggio Emilia

Reminders:

This year marks 30 years since I started Kids Incorporated, and it feels both humbling and joyful to reflect on the incredible journey it has been. Over the past three decades, I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful families and playing a small part in helping their children grow, explore, and discover the world around them. Thank you for being part of this community and for trusting us with your children.

Twenty-five years ago, I had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in a study tour in Reggio Emilia, Italy — the birthplace of the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education. That experience had a profound impact on me and helped shape the philosophy that guides our work at the Fox Hill School.

Many of the things I learned there continue to influence how we teach today. The Reggio philosophy reminds us that:

  • A child’s environment should be beautiful, thoughtful, and respectful, because it plays a powerful role in learning.

  • Children’s thinking and discoveries should be documented and celebrated, making their learning visible.

  • A school should be a true community, where families and educators support and learn from one another.

As many of you know, the teaching team at the Fox Hill School has worked together for nearly 20 of those 30 years, which is something truly special. Their dedication, collaboration, and love for the children are what make this community so strong.

In honor of our 30-year anniversary, I’ve been quietly saving and applying for professional development funding over the past few years. I’m thrilled to share that the stars have aligned: this year’s Reggio study tour happens to take place during Massachusetts April vacation week. Because of that timing, our entire teaching team will be traveling together to Reggio Emilia this April to participate in the study tour!

You can learn more about the organization that hosts these experiences here: Reggio Children.

As you know, our classrooms have been “traveling” around the world through our curriculum, and this will be a wonderful way to show the children that teachers learn through exploration, too. We are incredibly excited to experience firsthand the inspiration and magic of Reggio and to bring back new ideas, insights, and inspiration to incorporate into our classrooms.

Of course, we will also be bringing Mr. Fox Hill along on our learning adventure, so you will be able to follow our travels and see what we’re discovering through updates on his Instagram page.

Thank you for being such an important part of the Fox Hill community. We look forward to sharing our journey with you and the children when we return.

With gratitude,

Melanie
