EXPLORING STILL LIFE ART IN PRESCHOOL
Over the past few weeks, we have been discussing still life art. We created fall fruit still lifes using oil pastels! The children observed 2 real apples and 1 real peach closely, looking at their shapes, colors, shadows, and little details, before drawing what they saw.
Still life art may seem simple, but it plays a powerful role in early childhood development. When children draw from real objects, they're doing much more than just making art. They are...
Building observation skills: Still lifes teach children to slow down and really see-noticing color variations, shapes, light, and texture.
Developing focus and patience: Looking carefully and translating what they see onto paper encourages sustained attention and mindfulness.
Strengthening fine motor control: Holding and blending oil pastels builds hand strength and coordination.
Encouraging self-expression: Even though everyone is drawing the same object, each child's interpretation is unique-showing their individual perspective and creativity.
Introducing artistic concepts: Still lifes naturally introduce ideas like composition, proportion, and perspective in a developmentally appropriate way.
Through this activity, our young artists learned to appreciate beauty in everyday objects and discovered that art is much about seeing as it is about making. Each drawing turned out completely unique, showing the children's personalities and artistic styles. It was wonderful to see how proud they were of their finished work!
WASHING PUMPKINS FOR FALL FUN!
This past week, we had our first family fun event at FHS! To get ready for this, we took our fall fun outside and washed all the pumpkins for the event! Buckets of soapy water, sponges, and lots of laughing made it such a fun time. The kids loved feeling the cool, bumpy pumpkins and watching them shine as the dirt washed away.
It was simple, messy fun that got everyone excited about fall! The children loved being little helpers for our first family event!
